Sector Point of View · Climate & Clean Technology

Most climate technology is sold to a buyer with no budget line for it. Comprehension has to be built before the product can be evaluated at all.

A point of view, not a portfolio. These pages set out how we think brand-led growth works in each sector — the argument, not a claim of work already done there.

The Sentence Behind It

Climate & Clean Technology

We can prove the science. We have never once got past the first meeting with anyone who is not a scientist.

Composed, not quoted. It is the sentence this argument is written to answer — no client said it to us on the record.

The Argument

Why brand-led growthworks the wayit does here.

A climate technology company is almost always selling something the buyer has no existing budget line for, no procurement category for, and no internal precedent for approving. The obstacle is rarely scepticism about whether the technology works. It is that nobody in the room knows which drawer to put it in, who should sign for it, or what it should be compared against. That is a comprehension problem, and comprehension problems are solved by framing, language and design — not by more evidence.

The audience structure compounds it. The same organisation must be intelligible to grant bodies and public funds, to venture and strategic investors with different time horizons, to corporate buyers procuring against their own emissions commitments, to regulators, and eventually to a customer who simply wants the thing to work. Most companies in the sector solve this by maintaining several unrelated stories and rotating between them. The cost of that is invisible until the moment two audiences compare notes.

The sector also carries an unusual constraint that we regard as an advantage: overstatement is punished. Scrutiny of environmental claims has moved from journalism to regulation, and a claim that cannot be evidenced is now a liability with a legal shape. This forces a discipline that most categories avoid — saying precisely what is true, at the level of confidence it is true, and no further. Precision is not a limitation on the brand. In this sector it is the most persuasive thing available.

Brand-led growth in climate technology therefore starts before positioning. It starts with deciding what category the organisation is asking to be judged in, and then building a proof architecture strong enough that restraint reads as confidence rather than as weakness.

What Transformation Looks Like

What the workwould actuallyinvolve.

Written as a proposition rather than as a record. These are the moves we would argue for in this sector, and the reasoning behind each one.

  • 01

Name the category before selling the product

If the buyer has to invent a frame of reference on your behalf, they will invent the wrong one. Deciding what this is a kind of — and what it is deliberately not — is the first strategic act, and it sets the size of the market you are permitted to address.

  • 02

A proof architecture, not a claims architecture

Separating what is measured, what is modelled, what is third-party verified and what is aspiration — and labelling each as such — makes the strong claims survivable. Undifferentiated claiming makes all of them suspect.

  • 03

    One document, two audiences

The investor narrative and the customer narrative should be the same argument at different depths. Where they diverge, one of them is usually not true.

  • 04

    Design as a credibility instrument

Deep technology that looks provisional is discounted before it is examined. Industrial design, interface design and documentation are read as evidence of engineering discipline, fairly or otherwise.
